Entrepreneurs Have Lifestyles – not Jobs

When you read about the rising unemployment rate and layoffs nation-wide, how does that make you feel about the whole notion of “job security?”

It’s an illusion – right? While wonderful jobs can end in a moment’s notice, what is far more lasting are the skills and experience you’ve developed over the years in your career and family life. These are your personal assets and if you invest those assets into realizing financial and personal goals, you might very well have a successful business on your hands.

The process of becoming an entrepreneur is a lot like a job search. Just as job resume expert will advise you to be clear about your employment goals (know what it is you want to do at a company), so too do entrepreneurs need to have a vision of what they want.

Envisioning what it is you want to do as a business owner and how it is you want to live will become your motivation. Without that motivation sticking to your plans to build your business off hours while you’re still working or during those tough days before your business begins earning you an income, will be tough.

Lifestyle Changes

There comes a point for many would-be entrepreneurs when they make the decision not to live with the uncertainty of a job. Others simply come to the realization that there are goals they want to realize in life and becoming an entrepreneur is the solution to achieving those goals. If you can relate to these feelings then you too are likely ready to shake things up in your life.

There will be lifestyle changes with this decision. First, your income will in all likelihood vary quite a bit until your business strategy begins to click. Unless you’ve got significant funds to cushion your transition, this phase of entrepreneurship could be tough on your pocketbook.

You’ll also have to forget about the notion of a “paid vacation” – at least initially. When you were an employee if you had benefits you were getting paid as you took time off to relax.

As a new entrepreneur when you take a vacation your business will likely take a vacation too. Can you afford to do nothing in your business for a day or a week? For a lot of new entrepreneurs that’s just not possible.

But of course there are some great benefits to being an entrepreneur. First, you’ll have choices as to how you spend your days. If you want to accompany your child on a school trip in the morning and then work into the wee hours of the night on your business, that’s YOUR choice.

You won’t have to worry about what someone else thinks about your work schedule because you’ll be accountable for your business outcomes. Having the choice to put personal priorities ahead of other things in life is considered a huge lifestyle benefit for many entrepreneurs.

Another key benefit and one that likely motivated you to take that leap of faith in the first place, is the opportunity to control your financial destiny. No longer limited to the pay scales dictated by your employer, you now have the ability to earn the kind of income you’ve always dreamed of attaining for yourself and for your family.

So that’s some of the good news, and it goes without saying that it is going to take a lot of work to make your business dreams a reality. You’ll likely work more now than you ever did before. That’s why envisioning your goals is so important.

Inspiration through Thick and Thin

From talk show host celebrities to the latest personal development gurus, you’ve likely heard many times that to realize a goal you have to envision it. Knowing the lifestyle you want to lead and the income you want to enjoy are easy enough to talk about and even write down during a brainstorming session.

But what happens when you come face to face with a challenge that seems to threaten everything? Let’s say, for example, that your monthly retainer client who brings you 75% of your income every month drops off the face of the earth without notice.

Your utilities need to be paid and you have subcontractors who have just completed work related to this account and they need to be paid too.

Sure this is a dire situation, but it is a potentially real one. This is when you look at your business strategy, your back up plans and your GOALS and make the decisions you need to make to keep your business going.

Keeping your eyes focused on your personal lifestyle and financial goals will give you the motivation and energy to act upon the solutions you need to act on to work through your challenge, adjust your business and be ready for the next opportunity that will push you closer to the success you envision.
