Day 11: Tools of the Trade: Online Marketing Essentials

For the last 10 days you learned about marketing, creating your map, your funnel, and your target market. In other words you worked on the inside stuff. You know that stuff that will make it all happen. For the remainder of this series we will focus on the outside stuff.

Everything we covered now needs to be put to the test with implementation.

For the next few days we will cover tools of the trade as well as implementation tactics. For today let’s take a look at just some of the essential online marketing tools of the trade!

Your Marketing Map: We covered your marketing map with samples to help you understand how to begin developing your plan. You can read Days 2, 3, and 4 for a deeper understanding of your marketing map. For the purposes of this post, just be reminded that the marketing map will serve as the core of the direction you need to go in.

Your Funnel: Again this is a subject that we have already covered along with how to strategically plan using your funnel. Your funnel will pick up every part of your map and what does not fit needs to be placed on the backburner or moved altogether. Knowing your market will help you to determine this.

Your List: Yes your list is an important part of online marketing. After all you need people to make this online thing work so that your bottom line grows. A list does not have to have thousands of people to be effective. You just need a few key things:

  • An Email Marketing Host like Mail Chimp, Constant Contact, Rate Point, or Aweber. Now most folks use Aweber or Constant Contact but I personally use Mail Chimp. However you can choose the best one for your needs and don’t let someone force you into something that you are not interested in. Stick with what works for you. However make sure that the source you choose is reputable. If you are not sure ASK!
  • Content to share on a consistent basis. There are many ways to engage your market via a subscriber list. The main thing is to be consistent and have something of value for those who are kind enough to give you their personal contact information. They are expecting to hear from you.
  • A personal style. When you are marketing via email you really have to put YOU into it or else it just seems like you are selling and that is not good business. Remember that today’s market is smart and if they are signed up to your list then they expect YOU to show up and not some robot!
  • A Key Focus. Make sure that each one of your newsletters is focused and not a loose cannon. In-other-words, stick to one topic per newsletter. Now if you have an RSS fed newsletter know that your one focus is sharing what is on your blog.

Social Media Dashboard: Some folks don’t believe it but I am here to tell you that social media is important to your online marketing efforts. If it weren’t you would not have so many folks trying to be Social Media Gurus after using Twitter or Facebook for one week. However it can become a little cumbersome to post everywhere you have a profile. This is what makes Social Media Dashboards like Hootsuite (my fav), Digsby, or Seesmic so beneficial. You can connect with your market at one time without jumping from window to window! Just be sure not to abuse your marketing by posting the same thing everywhere at all times

I know this is a lot to take in, that is why I am breaking it down into days. You need the information to get started and I want you to get come value out of it! So breaking it up was necessary!

As you go through the next few days you may feel overwhelmed and feel a need for some assistance. I want to invite you to take me up on my complimentary consulting session. For 30 minutes we will look at where you are and where you need to go with online marketing. Just fill out the contact form and let’s get you started.
